On March 4, 1776 the British made an epic fail by evacuating Boston. The British actually obeyed Patriot General George Washington's order to leave Boston. The British were terrified because George Washington secretly led a force of 800 soldiers and 1,200 workers to Dorchester Heights and began fortifying the area. British General Sir William Howe hoped to use British ships in Boston Harbor to destroy the Patriot position, but a storm set in, giving the Patriots more time to complete the fortifications and set up their artillery. On March 17, 11,000 British troops and some 1,000 Royalists departed Boston by ship and sailed to the safety of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
